Over the past few years, we have rebuilt our refuge and farm buildings and equipped them for future management. Our ideas for the quality standard of the offers and the regulations for our gastronomy have made the renovation of the refuge necessary.
During the entire conversion process, our focus was particularly on sustainability, authenticity of material and construction, and preservation of the unique atmosphere. It was important to us to preserve the special nature of accommodation and catering, to expand the range of our own products and thus equip our refuge as a special place for the future.
Simplicity hasn’t been altered. In our rooms there is no electricity, but a candle. Just like the old days. A regenerating open-air shower with fresh spring water and panoramic view is available to all of our guests. Some public toilets and a shower are at your disposal inside the hut.
Up to 2 weeks before your arrival, the reservation can be cancelled free of charge. If the cancellation takes place after this deadline, the deposit will be held.
The walls, the structure, the doors and even the floor are made of local wood. The mattresses and the partition walls are filled with our hay.
This is the ideal place for families, couples and groups up to 6 people. Surrounded by hay, our guests will find themselves in a natural mountain dairy-like space of their own, with a view over the Valle Isarco’s lights, on the Sciliar and the Stubai Alps and of the heavenly night sky.
This room is equipped with private shower and bathroom.
Dogs are allowed inside the hut, whereas the barn can’t be booked with dogs.
Depending on the season, we take advantage of what the surrounding nature offers us, such as nettle, Good King Henry, dandelion and wild garlic. Watercress, radishes and various sorts of salads grow majestically in the biological garden behind our house, at an altitude of 1737m.
Moreover, our cows provide us with fresh milk, which we use to produce our mountain dairy butter, curd and yogurt. During winter we produce speck and Kaminwurzen without pickling salt and we smoke them with our juniper.
For breakfast you will find coffee, tea, homemade jams prepared by Bernadette, several types of bread, speck, cheese and home-made butter.
The Felix Luis is based on the fusion between the London gin process and the South Tyrolean distillation of fruit. All the ingredients are evenly distilled and then refined with the addition of mountain water and apricot distillate. This product comes from the partnership between Georg, Klaus (Barbara’s brother), Alessandro Secci and Benedict Skelton.
Just like vinegar, oil and our gin, we bottle prosecco as well – Valdobbiadene from Glera grapes – in partnership with the Garberhof hotel of Malles.
Jams are made from the fruit that Bernadette and Josef pick up in the valley and in the wood. Besides the classic strawberry and blueberry jams, we also produce jams with wild lingonberries, cherries, apples and plums, as well as with huckleberries and currants.
Our olive oil and our balsamic vinegar are produced in Grezzana, near Verona. Mediterranean gastronomic culture has thereby moved at our altitudes.
Elderflower, lemon balm and peppermint: our homemade syrups are served in our hut and can also be purchased.
Tschafon hut lies at the foot of Catinaccio/Rosengarten and is therefore an ideal starting point for several walks and hikes in the mountains. From here, our guests can benefit from the breathtaking view on the peaks of Catinaccio/Rosengarten, the Vajolet towers, Sciliar and Latemar, as well as of the surrounding nature, where wild herbs, berries and mushrooms grow and are then served to our guests.
The eldest nature park of South Tyrol, the Sciliar-Rosengarten, excites with its rich flora and fauna and is surrounded by the edgy peaks of the Dolomites, UNESCO world natural heritage site. Tschafon hut is the ideal starting or arrival point for your hikes, be they easy trips or multi-day tours, in one of South Tyrol’s most fascinating mountain environments.
The starting point is in Lavina Bianca, located upstream of S. Cipriano-Tires, where you will find many free parking lots. Path 4A leads, with a slight rise, to the forest road to the Wuhnleger, a pasture with a small pond, in whose water the summits of Catinaccio/Rosengarten and of the Vajolet towers are reflected (popular photo opportunity). Path n. 4 begins on the north side and leads to a crossway with a wooden crucifix: the comfortable path is panoramically very fascinating and less steep than the forest road. Along the way you will find many benches to stop by and catch your breath, while taking a look on the astonishing surrounding peaks and over the Tires valley. The last part of the trail leads to Tschafon hut (1737 m) through a mountain pine forest. From here it’s possible to reach in just 20 minutes the nearby top of Monte Balzo (Völseggspitze), a promontory with two panoramic terraces from where you can contemplate the Brenta Group, the Adamello glaciers, the Ötztal and Stubai Alps, the Catinaccio/Rosengarten, the Latemar, Corno Bianco and Corno Nero.
The starting point of this walk is the public parking lot at Schönblick restaurant, upstream of Aica di Fiè. From here you have to follow path n. 6 eastward and after about 20 minutes you will reach the Ansitz Völsegg residence. Following path 4B for about 40 minutes, you will reach the pasture of Wuhnleger with its small pond, in which the legendary Catinaccio/Rosengarten and the Vajolet towers are reflected (popular photo opportunity). Afterwards you have to proceed on paths n. 4 and 4A towards Tschafon hut (1737 m). Hungry by the climb, hikers can enjoy the tasty delicacies freshly prepared; meanwhile the children can have fun in the large surrounding lawn. From the hut you can reach in just 20 minutes the nearby summit of Monte Balzo (Völseggspitze), a rocky ledge with two panoramic terraces, from where you can be amazed by the unrivaled view of the Brenta Group, the Adamello glaciers, the Ortler massif, the Ötztal and Stubai Alps, the Catinaccio/Rosengarten, the Latemar, Corno Bianco and Corno Nero. The descent takes place along the north side of the Tschafon on path n. 4, towards Fiè. Halfway down the mountain, you will cross paths n. 7A and 7, leading back to the starting point, at Schönblick restaurant.
A nice hike towards Tschafon hut starts from the pond of Fiè, at the foot of the Sciliar. Directly by the lake you will find a big shaded parking lot; from there you have to take path n. 1 in the direction of Malga Tuff and Malga Hofer and then proceed on path n. 7, which runs alongside the Croda del Maglio. After walking for a total of three and a half hours, you will reach Tschafon hut on path 7B. Freshly prepared dishes such as salads, canederli dumplings with goulash, omelettes with nettle and Good King Henry spinach and wild berries’ cakes are only some of the many specialties of the hut. The descent takes place on the southern side of the Tschafon, following paths n. 4 and 4A towards Tires. From here you will go back to the starting point at the pond of Fiè by taking a hiking bus. The excursion can be walked in the opposite direction as well.
The trail on the ridge of Croda del Maglio is the most challenging route to reach Tschafon hut. The starting point of this hike is the parking lot of Lavina Bianca di Tires (1180 m). The tour begins with a steep ascent on path n. 2, through the gorge of Gola dell’Orsara (Bärenfalle) up to the saddle “Sella Cavaccio" (Tschafatsch-Sattel–2070 m). For the following stretch along path n. 9, towards Croda del Maglio (Hammerwand) – Tschafon, a sure-footedness and no fear of heights are required. The trail changes every step of the way and rewards with breathtaking landscapes, reaching the summits of Mezzodì (Mittagskofel), Monte Nicola (Nigglbergs) and Croda del Maglio (Hammerwand), until reaching Tschafon hut. After a restoring break at the hut, the descent takes place along path n. 4 – 4A up to the parking of Lavina Bianca.
Renovating and combining the modern lifestyle with the respect for the principles in force up here, such as using the earnest local supplies, a solid structure and producing one’s own meals, is the hard task of the third generation.
The second generation of the hut takes care of the cuisine, the garden and the guests. When the evening stillness reigns over the dusky fields, it is possible to listen to the stories about the construction, the renovation and the life of the mountain dairy.
If you’re arriving with your car, the best starting point is the parking lot of Lavina Bianca, upstream the village of S. Cipriano (Tires). Other parking options can be found at Schönblick restaurant, the cableway station of S. Cipirano (Tires) and by the pond of Fiè.
(Some parking lots are chargeable)
